Stage 2 Update

With the Alberta government's early move toward Stage 2 of its relaunch plan, many of our fencing families will be wondering if EFC will be reopening in June.

Indoor sports and recreation, such as fencing, were originally not slated to reopen until Stage 3 (likely September), so the club took the opportunity to start some much-needed renovations, beginning with adding a new furnace and ventilation system that will help with air flow in the gym (we know how hard our fencers work in there!). That work is expected to be completed some time in July, then the Board of Directors will evaluate what further renovations need to be done, and set a date to reopen.

In the meantime, EFC is working closely with the Alberta Fencing Association, our governing body, to develop a return to play protocol in accordance with Alberta Health and Canadian Fencing Federation guidelines that will keep fencers, staff, and families safe as we move forward.

Keep up conditioning and enjoy the summer weather!

Message from the President

March 31, 2020

Dear EFC fencing family,

The fencing club continues to remain temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the best move for the safety and health of our fencers, coaches and staff, as well as the health and safety of Edmontonians in general as we help “flatten the curve” by encouraging everyone to stay at home.

Currently, tournaments have been postponed both domestically and internationally, notably including the Olympics. I feel that speaks to the seriousness with which we need to take this health emergency. Please check out the Alberta government’s COVID-19 website for the latest information and abide by their recommendations and any applicable health orders.

To help everyone keep in fencing form, I’d encourage you to check out fencers’ social media for some inspiration on workouts and training exercises you can do at home. Daniel and Spencer are looking to do something similar for our own fencers from the safety of their homes; check our facebook page for their posts!

Remember that your mental health is equally as important as your physical health. These are stressful and uncertain times, and most of our daily routines have been altered at least a bit (and in some cases, quite drastically.) There are many resources available, including these specific COVID-19 tips from Alberta Health Services.

As the club may be closed for some time, if there is any equipment or personal effects that you would like to retrieve, please email to arrange for retrieval in an orderly and socially-distanced manner. Please do not just show up at the club.

I hope we can all meet again soon at the club and on the piste! Until then, stay home, wash your hands, and keep your eyes on our website and your email inbox for further club updates.

                                                                        Yours truly,

                                                                                                                                                        Colin Longhurst

                                                                                                                              President, EFC Board of Directors

The Edmonton Fencing Club is temporarily closed for classes, community demos, and birthday parties.

We are committed to the health and safety of our fencers and their families. This measure should help to "flatten the curve" in Alberta, and help keep the virus from spreading at the rapid rate we have seen in other countries.

The Board is in constant contact via email, and will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, to plan for a short-term closure and a long-term closure.

Payments for classes made thus far will not be refunded at this time. All families will have make-up classes added to their accounts for the number of weeks EFC remains closed. Please check back here for further updates.

EFC is dedicated to its staff, and will follow Provincial and Federal guidelines for continuing to support its staff financially and otherwise through this closure.

Please email if you have any questions regarding the club's closure.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.
